Solar energy is perhaps the best known of all the alternative energy sources. All life on Earth depends on the sun; the heat and light of the sun has been used throughout history and predates coal, oil and gas as a viable energy solution. Solar energy can be converted into electricity, which is known as solar power. Sunlight can be converted into electricity directly and indirectly by using photovoltaic (PV), most commonly referred to as solar cells or solar panels, and Concentrating Solar Power (CSP), respectively.

The amount of energy transmitted to the Earth by the sun annually is more than adequate to meet all of our energy demands; however, it is the effective harnessing of this energy that is the issue. Solar energy is only available during daylight hours, which makes storage an important factor.

Scientists are conducting research into space-based solar power (SBSP) in order to harness solar energy in outer space. The concept originated as a result of research carried out by American scientists over 40 years ago; it is recognised that SBSP represents an important strategic development in solar power generation, but research into effective solar technologies on Earth needs to be continued.
