Wind power is harnessed by exploiting wind energy through various methods, this primarily includes wind turbines, windmills, wind pumps and wind sails. It remains one of the most effective methods to convert renewable energy.

The power of the wind has been utilised by humans throughout history. Wind power has been at the centre of some of society’s major cultural developments: mariners used the power of the wind to travel the seas, farmers used windmills to grind grain, and colonists and settlers used windmills to cut wood and pump water.

The process of harnessing wind power has developed simultaneously around the world. The logical progression of the windmill has transformed into the wind turbine, a rotary device that effectively harnesses wind energy. The most common wind turbine in operation in the renewable energy sector is the horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT), which consists of a main rotor shaft with an electrical generator positioned at the top of the mast, and has two or three blades. The HAWT must be positioned facing into the wind for it to reach peak generation.
